The City of Medical Lake has a strong mayor form of government characterized by a separation of executive, legislative, and judicial powers and has a system of checks and balances patterned after our traditional national and state governments. The power of government is inherent in the people.
The mayor is elected and serves as the city’s chief executive officer and seven elected city council members (the legislators) are responsible for formulating and adopting city policies and ordinances. The city contracts with the City of Cheney for judicial services.
The elected mayor and city council members all serve on a part-time basis serving four-year terms. Under the direction of the mayor, the city administrator serves as the chief operations officer. The city administrator carries out the policies established by the city council, provides leadership to city departments, assesses community needs, is liaison to the community, leads interdepartmental planning efforts, and works directly with the mayor in collaboration with regional partners.
Comprehensive Plan
Medical Lake’s Comprehensive Plan is a decision-making tool. The plan reflects the residents’ chosen path into the future by anticipating changes in the community and laying out policies and programs to guide the city in managing these changes.

City Council Meetings
Meetings are held at 6:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers upstairs in City Hall.
City Council meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, except in June, July, August and September. During these months, only one council meeting will be held on the 3rd Tuesday at 6:30 P.M.
Meeting agenda and associated documents are posted the Friday before each meeting.
Medical Lake’s City Council is committed to an open and responsive government.
At the start of each Council meeting, time is set aside so that members of the public may share their ideas and comments on City business and activities directly with the City Council.
